Numbers and some uses for them Empty Numbers and some uses for them

When counting in Japanese, you can have more than one way to say the number in certain situations. At the same time, in most cases they are said the same way so I will mostly go over their most common reading.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only numbers with a 4 or 7 in them are normally read differently, these two can be read either way when counting and have their readings more interchangeable. I is good to know how all the numbers are said, but remember that there are different ways to read the numbers.

When using numbers to count something, such as age, you add what is called a "counter" onto the end of the word. Since there are many different counters I will only be going over a few for now.

To specify a time for hours, the number gets followed by the character じ, which means time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Time, minutes (number followed by ふん, ぶん, or ぷん):

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can use both the time for minutes and hours at the same time to be more specific about the time. An example would be "さんじじゅうごふん" which is 3:15. This doesn't specify whether it is AM or PM; in order to do this you add こんぜん for AM and ごご for PM before the counter. To modify the previous example it could become "ごごさんじじゅうごふん" which would mean 3:15 PM.

In most cases when using 30 minutes after an hour you would use "はん" instead of "さんじゅっぷん" or "さんじっぷん." An example would be "ごぜんにじはん" meaning 2:30 AM.

Age (number followed by ちい):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When saying an age, it follows the same structure as you start to see with 11 years old with only one exception being 20 years old. While 20 years old can follow the same patter, it is mostly likely to be heard being called はたち.

While going through these list please note that in some cases there are different reading for the numbers that get used. This is most noticeable with minutes.
